Plant Health Care is the ongoing care of the trees and shrubs already on your property: root-zone fertilization, insect and disease management, deer protection, dormant pruning, and soil work. It is the difference between replacing a twenty-year-old specimen and keeping it. We run PHC as an annual program across Chester County, Delaware County and the Main Line, on any property — not only landscapes JHL installed.

Why Established Plants Fail Here

Most of what kills mature trees and shrubs in our area is slow and preventable. Heavy clay over Wissahickon schist drains badly and compacts easily, so root zones run short of oxygen. Plants that were installed too deep never recover. Mulch piled against trunks holds moisture where it does damage. By the time the canopy is visibly thin, the plant has usually been in decline for two or three seasons.

The point of a PHC program is to catch that early, when it is still a soil problem rather than a removal quote.

Root-Zone Fertilization and Soil Health

Feeding a tree is mostly a soil question. Broadcasting fertilizer on turf above a tree's root zone feeds the turf. We work the root zone directly, and only after we know what the soil is short of, because our soils are frequently not short of the thing people assume.

Where compaction is the limiting factor, adding nutrients changes nothing until air and water can move again. That work — decompaction, organic matter, correcting depth and mulch — often does more for a struggling shrub border than any product.

Insect, Disease and Deer

Deer are the single most destructive force on Main Line and western Chester County plantings, and they are not going anywhere. Protection is a combination of the right plant choices, physical protection on young trunks through the rub season, and repellent applied on a real rotation through the browse months rather than once in October.

On insects and disease, we treat what is actually present. Scheduled blanket spraying is easier to sell and worse for the property — it costs you money in years when there is no pressure, and it takes out the predatory insects that suppress the pests in the years when there is.

Dormant Pruning and Structural Work

Winter is when structure is visible and most trees and shrubs are least stressed by cutting. Dormant-season pruning is where we remove crossing and rubbing limbs, take out deadwood, correct co-dominant leaders on young trees before they become a failure point, and reduce shrubs that have outgrown their position.

We prune to the plant's habit. Shearing an azalea or a viburnum into a box removes the flowering wood and gives you a green lump with a dead interior, which is why so many established foundation plantings look tired from the outside in.

Is this the same as lawn fertilization? No. Plant Health Care is tree and shrub care — the woody plants. Lawn work, including aeration and overseeding, sits in our property maintenance program. Many clients run both, and they are scheduled together so you are not managing two calendars.

How do you handle deer? With plant selection where we are installing, physical protection on young trunks through the fall rub season, and repellent applied on a rotation across the browse months. Deer adapt to a single repellent used repeatedly, so rotation and timing matter more than product choice.

Do you spray on a schedule? We treat what is present rather than spraying a blanket calendar. Blanket programs cost you money in low-pressure years and remove the beneficial insects that suppress pests in the years that matter. Monitoring visits are scheduled; treatments follow what those visits find.
