Outdoor Kitchen Design for Chester County & the Main Line
An outdoor kitchen is one of the most demanding projects in a backyard, blending construction, utilities, and appliances into a single space that has to survive a Pennsylvania winter. At JHL Landscape Design, every kitchen begins as a custom 3D rendering so you can see the layout, materials, and finishes before a single block is set. We design and build for Main Line estates and Chester County homes that want a true outdoor cooking room, not a bolt-on grill.
Layout, Work Triangle & Zoning
A great outdoor kitchen starts with how you move through it. We plan the work triangle the same way an indoor kitchen designer would, keeping the grill, prep surface, and storage within an easy step of each other so the cook is never crossing traffic to reach a tool or a sink. From there we zone the larger footprint around how Main Line families actually entertain.
On the larger Wayne, Gladwyne, and Villanova properties we design with, there is usually room and budget to separate the hot zone from the social zone. That means the grill and side burner sit on one run, prep and refrigeration on another, and a raised bar or seating counter faces the guests so the cook stays in the conversation rather than turned to a wall.
Zones we map in the 3D rendering
- Hot zone: grill, side burner, and optional pizza oven with proper clearances
- Prep zone: counter run, sink, and cutting space beside the grill
- Cold/storage zone: refrigeration, drawers, and weatherproof cabinetry
- Social zone: bar overhang, counter seating, and a path to the patio and fire feature
Materials Built for Freeze-Thaw Winters
We sit in USDA Zone 6b to 7a, where the real enemy is not a single cold night but the repeated freeze-thaw cycle that works water into any crack and pries materials apart over the winter. Every structural and surface choice in your kitchen is specified to handle that, which is why we design AND build rather than hand off a rendering and hope a contractor respects the details.
Cabinetry & structure
- Stone veneer over a masonry or steel-stud frame for a solid, estate-grade look
- Stucco finishes for a cleaner, more contemporary Main Line aesthetic
- Ipe and other dense hardwoods where warm wood accents are wanted, sealed for our climate
Countertops
- Granite for the most durable, low-maintenance work surface
- Soapstone for a softer, honed look that handles heat well
- Sealed concrete for custom shapes, integrated drainboards, and edge profiles
As an ICPI-certified design studio, we detail the substructure, drainage, and joints so countertops and veneer do not heave or spall after a few seasons. The goal is a kitchen that still looks built-to-last when the rendering is a decade old.
Appliances & Utilities
The appliance package drives the rough-ins, so we lock it during design rather than after the masonry is up. We size openings for the exact built-in units you choose and route gas, electric, and water before the first course is laid.
Built-in appliances we design around
- Built-in gas or propane grill and a dedicated side burner
- Outdoor-rated refrigeration, beverage drawers, and a kegerator on bar-forward layouts
- Prep sink, storage drawers, and a trash/recycling pull-out
- Pizza oven, where the footprint and chimney clearances allow
Utilities are where outdoor kitchens go wrong, so we plan them early. We design for a natural-gas line tied to the home or a concealed propane supply, GFCI-protected electrical for refrigeration and lighting, and a water feed with proper drainage. Because PA townships have their own rules, we factor gas-line and permit considerations into the plan so the build does not stall.
Winterization
We design every kitchen to be drained down and shut off for winter: pitched water lines, accessible shut-offs, and refrigeration you can pull or cover. That detail is what lets the kitchen go year after year through our freeze-thaw season without a spring repair list.
Integrating the Kitchen Into the Whole Yard
An outdoor kitchen is rarely a standalone object. We design it as part of the surrounding patio, shade structure, and fire feature so the materials, levels, and sightlines all agree. The same 3D rendering that shows your kitchen also shows the patio it sits on and the fire pit or fireplace it faces.
- Patio surfaces and grade that tie the kitchen, dining, and lounge zones together
- Pergolas and shade structures to cover the cook and define the room
- A coordinated fire feature so the kitchen and the gathering space read as one design
- Lighting and finishes carried through from the kitchen into the larger outdoor living space
Frequently Asked Questions
What does an outdoor kitchen cost? Cost depends almost entirely on scope. A grill-and-counter setup with stone veneer sits at one tier, while a full kitchen with refrigeration, a sink, a pizza oven, a bar, and a covering structure sits well above it. Because we start every project with a custom 3D rendering and an appliance list, we can show you exactly where your design lands and adjust before anything is built.
Should I go with a built-in gas grill or charcoal? For a permanent built-in, most Main Line clients choose a natural-gas or propane grill because it is ready on demand and integrates cleanly into the cabinetry and utility runs. We can design for a dedicated charcoal or wood unit if you want that flavor, often alongside the gas grill, but it changes clearances and ventilation, which is why we settle it during design.
Can I use an outdoor kitchen year-round in Pennsylvania? The cooking surfaces, yes. A covered, well-sited kitchen with a grill and a nearby fire feature is very usable on cold, clear days. The plumbing and refrigeration are what need winterizing, so we design drain-down water lines and removable or coverable cold storage so the kitchen survives our freeze-thaw winters.
Do I need permits or a gas line for an outdoor kitchen? Often, yes. Running a gas line and adding GFCI electrical typically involve township permits, and requirements vary across Chester County, Delaware County, and the Main Line. We account for gas-line and permit considerations in the design so the plan is buildable and the project moves cleanly through approvals.
