Water Feature Design for Chester County & the Main Line
A well-designed water feature turns a backyard into a destination, adding the sound of moving water, wildlife, and a focal point you notice every day. Since 2004, JHL Landscape Design has designed and built pondless waterfalls, naturalistic streams, koi ponds, and formal fountains across Chester County, Delaware County, and the Main Line. Every project starts with a custom 3D rendering, so you see exactly how the feature sits before we move a stone.
Pond or Pondless? Choosing the Right Water Feature
The first decision shapes everything else. A pondless waterfall recirculates water through a hidden underground basin, so there is no standing pool at the surface. It is the safer choice around young children and pets, uses less water, and asks for far less upkeep. A full ecosystem or koi pond gives you open water, fish, and aquatic plants, but carries more maintenance and higher cost. We walk you through the tradeoffs honestly during design.
What we weigh together
- Safety: pondless features eliminate open water, a real consideration for families with toddlers
- Maintenance appetite: koi ponds need seasonal cleanouts and water-quality care; pondless features mostly need a topped-up basin
- Cost: pondless builds typically run lower up front and over time than equivalent ponds
- Goals: fish and lily pads point toward a pond; pure sound and movement point toward pondless or a fountain
The Full Range We Design and Build
Water features are not one product. We match the style to your home and the way you use the yard, whether that means a stream that looks like it was always there or a clean architectural fountain by a patio.
- Pondless waterfalls: low-maintenance, child-safe, with a hidden recirculating basin
- Naturalistic streams: meandering runs set into the grade with PA fieldstone and boulders
- Koi and ecosystem ponds: open water with biological filtration, plants, and fish
- Formal fountains and spillway or urn features: a tidy focal point for courtyards and entries
- Basalt-column and bubbler features: sculptural, kid-friendly, and easy to tuck into planting beds
Naturalistic styles suit the rolling, wooded lots common in Chester County and the Main Line, where a stream tied into the grade reads as part of the land. Formal fountains and basalt columns pair better with traditional or contemporary architecture and smaller, structured spaces. Your 3D rendering lets you compare options before anything is built.
Siting, Grade, and Recirculation in Our Soils
A water feature only looks effortless when the engineering underneath is right. We site features to use natural grade where possible, so streams fall the way water actually moves and pumps work less. Chester County's clay-heavy soils hold water and shift, so we excavate, set proper liners and basins, and build in drainage. Recirculating pumps are sized to the flow you want, with quiet operation and accessible equipment for service.
Designed into the wider landscape
The best water features never look dropped in. We integrate ours with boulder placement, surrounding plantings, and low-voltage lighting so the feature glows after dark and reads as a natural part of the yard. Pairing a stream or pond with the right plants and stone is where our design studio earns its keep, tying directly into the larger landscape and outdoor living plan.
Winterization, Algae, and Mosquito Realities
We design for our climate, not a catalog photo. The West Chester area sits in Zone 6b to 7a with real freeze-thaw cycles, so features are built and winterized to handle ice without cracking liners or damaging pumps. With roughly 46 inches of rain a year, overflow and drainage are planned from the start.
- Winterization: pumps and plumbing protected through freeze-thaw, with seasonal shutdown guidance
- Mosquitoes: moving water in a properly designed feature does not breed mosquitoes the way still water does
- Algae: balanced ecosystem ponds, shade, and the right circulation keep algae in check without constant chemicals
- Low maintenance: pondless and bubbler features are the easiest to live with year-round
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I get a pond or a pondless waterfall? If you have young children or want the lowest maintenance and cost, a pondless waterfall is usually the better fit because there is no standing water and the basin is hidden underground. If you want fish, lily pads, and open water as a centerpiece, an ecosystem or koi pond is worth the added care. We help you decide during the design phase based on your yard, budget, and how much upkeep you want.
How much maintenance does a water feature need? It depends on the type. Pondless waterfalls and bubblers mostly need the basin topped up and an occasional cleaning. Koi and ecosystem ponds need seasonal cleanouts, water-quality attention, and plant care. All of our features include winterization for our Zone 6b to 7a freeze-thaw climate so pumps and liners survive the cold.
Will a water feature attract mosquitoes? Properly designed features with moving, recirculating water do not provide the still standing water mosquitoes need to breed. The waterfalls, streams, and fountains we build keep water in motion, which is one more reason naturalistic and pondless designs hold up well in our area.
What do water features cost? Cost varies widely with size, style, and stonework, and pondless features generally start lower than comparable koi ponds. Because every project begins with a custom 3D rendering and a scoped design, you see the feature and understand the investment before construction begins rather than getting a surprise.
