Pool Landscape Design — Turning a Pool Into a Complete Outdoor Environment

A pool alone is a feature. A pool with thoughtful landscape design is an environment — one where the surround feels as intentional as the water, where privacy is built in rather than bolted on, and where the pool area integrates with the rest of the outdoor space rather than existing as an island in the yard.

JHL Landscape Design approaches pool landscape design as a complete design problem — not just pool decking and a few shrubs. The pool surround, the fencing (required by Pennsylvania code), the plantings, the lighting, and the transition back to the main outdoor living area are all designed together, in 3D, before installation begins.

Pool Landscape Design Services

Pool Surround & Decking The hardscape immediately around the pool — coping, decking material, layout, and transition to other areas. Material choices: bluestone, travertine, concrete pavers, poured concrete, or composite decking for adjacent structures. Each material has performance trade-offs in a wet pool environment; we'll walk you through them.

Pool Coping The material at the pool's edge — where the pool shell meets the deck. Bullnose bluestone, travertine, and manufactured coping units all have different aesthetics, durability profiles, and cost implications. Coping is both functional and one of the most visible material choices in a pool landscape.

Privacy Screening Pennsylvania requires pool fencing — but fencing doesn't have to look like a chain-link cage. We design integrated screening using:

  • Architectural fencing (aluminum, wood, composite) designed to match the home
  • Planting screens (arborvitae, skip laurel, native shrubs) for soft, living privacy
  • Combined solutions: low fence with planting integrated on the exterior

Plantings Selecting the right plants around pools requires care — leaf drop, root behavior, pollen, and moisture tolerance all matter. We select pool-appropriate plantings: ornamental grasses, low-maintenance evergreens, drought-tolerant perennials that won't dump debris in your pool weekly.

Landscape Lighting Pool areas used after dark (which is most pool areas) need thoughtful lighting — underwater lighting (typically handled by the pool contractor), but also perimeter lighting, pathway lighting from house to pool, accent lighting on plantings and fencing, and ambient lighting for the pool deck area.

Equipment Concealment Pool equipment (pump, filter, heater, automation) is necessary but ugly. We design concealment screens — planted buffers, lattice panels, or small structures — that hide the equipment pad without impeding access for maintenance.

Transition to Main Outdoor Living Area The pool area shouldn't feel disconnected from the main patio and outdoor living space. We design the transition — the path, the step changes, the planting between zones — so the property feels cohesive.

Pennsylvania Pool Fencing Requirements

Pennsylvania requires all pools over 24 inches deep to be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches tall with a self-latching, self-closing gate. This is non-negotiable. We design fencing that meets code and looks intentional — not like compliance was the only consideration.

Pool-Appropriate Plant Selection

Most of the plants people want around pools — certain ornamental trees, flowering shrubs — are terrible choices for pool surrounds. We select plants based on:

Low debris: Ornamental grasses, evergreen shrubs, perennials that don't drop leaves, seeds, or pods into the pool weekly Root behavior: Avoid plants with aggressive root systems near pool shells and coping Moisture tolerance: Pool surrounds get splashed. Plants need to handle wet feet periodically Maintenance reality: Low-maintenance choices that look good without weekly trimming

Common appropriate choices for Chester County pools: Karl Foerster grass, Little Lime hydrangea (away from water edge), Skip laurel screening, Blue Oat grass, Japanese Forest grass for shaded pool surrounds.

Chester County & Main Line Pool Landscape Context

Chester County properties (West Chester territory) Larger lots allow more flexibility in pool placement and surround design. Westtown and Pocopson Township properties often have the acreage for a full pool environment — separate pool area, transition garden, and main outdoor living area as distinct zones.

Main Line properties (Newtown Square territory) Tighter lots in Haverford, Wynnewood, and Narberth require careful design to create a pool environment that doesn't overwhelm the yard. We frequently work on Main Line pool surround designs where the challenge is making a modest pool area feel complete and private within a constrained footprint.

FAQs — Pool Landscape Design

Q: Do you install pools? A: We do not install pool shells — that's a separate specialty contractor. We design and install everything around the pool: the hardscape surround, fencing, plantings, lighting, and equipment screening.

Q: Should I design the pool landscape at the same time as the pool installation? A: Yes — ideally simultaneously. Having the landscape design finalized before pool construction begins allows coordination of conduit runs for lighting, equipment pad placement, drainage, and decking substrate. Pool contractors often cut corners on these details when the landscape designer isn't in the process.

Q: What's the difference between pool coping and pool decking? A: Coping is the material at the immediate edge of the pool — the cap. Decking is everything else beyond the coping that forms the pool surround. These materials can match or deliberately contrast, and both choices affect the overall look.

Q: What hardscape materials work best around pools? A: Bluestone and travertine are beautiful but require sealing and have some slip risk when wet. Brushed concrete pavers with a textured surface offer good slip resistance and durability. Concrete is economical but shows staining. We'll recommend based on your priorities (aesthetics, maintenance, budget).

Q: How much does pool landscape design typically cost? A: Pool surround hardscape alone (excluding the pool): $15,000–$40,000 for a typical residential pool surround, depending on material and size. A complete pool environment (surround, fencing, plantings, lighting, equipment screening) can run $25,000–$75,000+.
