Garden Bed Installation & Planting in Chester County & the Main Line
A new garden bed is only as good as the ground it sits in. As a design-build company serving Chester County, Delaware County, and the Main Line for 20-plus years, JHL Landscape Design installs new planting beds the right way: clean layout and edging, real soil prep for our heavy clay, and the perennials, shrubs, and color that turn bare lawn into a finished bed. We build foundation beds, mixed borders, and full garden beds that establish and look intentional.
Bed Layout, Edging & Definition
A bed reads as designed when its shape and edge are deliberate. We lay out new beds with clean, flowing lines that suit the house and the yard, sized so plants have room to mature without crowding the lawn or the walk. The edge does the visual work: a crisp spade-cut trench edge, steel, aluminum, or stone keeps mulch in and turf out.
Foundation beds & mixed borders
Foundation beds frame the house and soften its base; we scale them so they flatter the architecture instead of swallowing the windows. Mixed borders layer shrubs, perennials, and seasonal color into a deeper, fuller planting. Either way, the layout comes first, so the planting has structure to sit in.
- Bed shapes set with clean, intentional lines suited to the house and yard
- Spade-cut, steel, aluminum, or stone edging to hold the line and keep turf out
- Beds sized for mature plant width so they fill in without crowding
- Foundation beds, mixed borders, and freestanding garden beds
Soil Prep & Amendment for Clay
This is where most beds are won or lost. Our soils are heavy Wissahickon-schist clay that compacts, holds water, and resists roots. Dropping plants into raw clay sets them up to struggle, so we prepare the whole bed, not just the planting holes.
- Existing turf and weeds removed or smothered before planting
- Compacted clay loosened and broken so roots can spread
- Compost and amendment blended in to improve structure and drainage
- Whole-bed prep, not just individual planting holes, for even establishment
Drainage in the Bed
Clay and a flat or low bed make a soggy combination, and most plants hate wet feet. Where a bed tends to hold water, we grade it to shed runoff, raise it slightly, or improve internal drainage so roots are not sitting in standing water through our wet shoulder seasons. Getting drainage right at installation prevents the slow decline of waterlogged clay, root rot and stunted growth, and is far easier than rescuing a struggling bed later.
Planting & Mulch
With the bed shaped, prepped, and draining, the planting goes in. We set perennials, shrubs, and groundcovers at the right depth and spacing for mature size, layering for four-season interest so the bed has structure in winter and color through the growing season. We favor deer-resistant and native selections that hold up to our local pressure.
Mulch & finish
- Perennials, shrubs, and groundcovers placed by mature size and light
- Deer-resistant and native material suited to clay and Zone 6b-7a
- Two to three inches of mulch to hold moisture and suppress weeds, kept off stems
- Clean final edge and an establishment watering plan for the first season
Healthy stock, real soil prep, and proper establishment watering are what make a new bed thrive, and we back our installations. Spring and fall are our prime windows. Call (610) 422-3474 to scope your garden beds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does soil prep matter so much for a new garden bed? Our heavy Wissahickon-schist clay compacts, holds water, and resists roots, so plants set into raw clay struggle no matter how good they are. We prep the whole bed, removing turf, loosening the clay, and blending in compost and amendment, so roots can actually spread. Whole-bed prep is the single biggest reason a new bed fills in and looks intentional instead of sulking for years.
What kind of edging do you install? We use clean spade-cut trench edges, steel or aluminum edging, and stone, chosen to suit the style of the house and bed. A defined edge keeps mulch in, keeps turf and weeds out, and is what makes a bed read as designed rather than improvised. We will recommend the edge that fits your look and your maintenance preferences.
How do you handle drainage in a wet bed? Clay plus a flat or low bed often means standing water, which most plants cannot tolerate. Depending on the site we grade the bed to shed runoff, raise it slightly, or improve internal drainage so roots are not waterlogged through our wet seasons. Solving drainage before planting is far easier than rescuing a struggling, root-rotted bed later.
What do you plant in a new bed? We plant perennials, shrubs, and groundcovers placed by mature size and light, layered for four-season interest, and we favor deer-resistant and native selections suited to our clay and Zone 6b-7a climate. The bed is mulched and given an establishment watering plan for its first season. Reach our West Chester studio at (610) 422-3474 to get started.
