West Chester has a character unlike anywhere else in Pennsylvania — historic streetscapes, Chester County estate lots, and properties where outdoor design is taken seriously. JHL Landscape Design is rooted here. Our West Chester office at 701 S Franklin St has been the starting point for hundreds of landscape transformations across the borough, Westtown, Pocopson, Kennett Square, Exton, and the surrounding communities.

We don't just build landscapes — we design them first. Every project starts with a custom 3D rendering so you can see exactly what your property will look like before we break ground.

What We Do in West Chester

Landscape Design & Master Planning From a simple front yard refresh to a full property master plan, our design team creates comprehensive plans tailored to your property's topography, soil, and the natural character of Chester County. Every design begins with a detailed site analysis and ends with a 3D rendering you approve before work begins.

3D Landscape Rendering See your future yard in full detail before a single plant goes in the ground. Our 3D rendering process gives you the confidence to commit — and the ability to make changes when they're still on screen, not after they're installed.

Outdoor Living Space Design West Chester homeowners invest in outdoor spaces that work year-round. Patios, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, built-in seating, and multi-level entertaining areas designed to complement your home and your lifestyle.

Hardscape Design & Installation ICPI-certified hardscape installation. Pavers, natural stone, bluestone, concrete — designed for Chester County's soil conditions and installed to last decades. We specify the right base preparation and drainage for every project.

Retaining Wall Design Chester County's rolling topography means retaining walls are a technical necessity, not just an aesthetic choice. We engineer walls that hold — calculating soil pressure, drainage, and material selection based on your site's actual conditions.

Patio Design & Installation From intimate courtyard patios tucked behind historic West Chester homes to expansive entertainment decks on larger Westtown lots — we design and install patios that become the center of your outdoor life.

Pool Landscape Design A pool without proper landscape design is just a hole in the ground. We integrate pool areas into a cohesive outdoor design — pool surrounds, plantings, lighting, fencing, and privacy screening that make the whole property feel intentional.

Landscape Lighting Extend the life of your outdoor space into the evening. Architectural lighting for hardscape features, path lighting for safety, and accent lighting that makes your property look like a magazine spread after dark.

Front Yard Landscape Design In West Chester's historic neighborhoods and newer Chester County developments alike, curb appeal matters. We design front yards that reflect the character of your home and your neighborhood.

Backyard Transformation Backyard oasis design from concept through installation. Whether you're starting from scratch or renovating an existing space, we design a backyard that works for how you actually live.

Design Studio vs. General Landscaper — Why It Matters

JHL Landscape Design is a landscape design studio, not a general maintenance company. The distinction matters for how your project is handled from the first conversation to the finished installation.

A general landscaper will plant what is available, pave what is easy, and move to the next job. A design studio starts with a 3D rendering of your property, a complete plan you approve before a single plant goes in the ground. Every decision in our installations is traceable back to an intentional design choice.

We do not offer lawn mowing, routine fertilization, or general maintenance contracts. We design and build landscapes, and we maintain them for clients who want ongoing design-quality care, not basic upkeep.

Licensed, Certified, and Accountable

  • PA Home Improvement Contractor License #PA035784 Required for all residential landscape construction in Pennsylvania. Verify at the PA Attorney General office.
  • ICPI Certified Installer Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute certification. The industry standard for paver and hardscape installation quality. Not all contractors hold this certification.
  • HBA Member, Chester and Delaware Counties Active member of the Home Builders Association of Chester and Delaware Counties.
  • BBB A+ Rating Accredited business with Better Business Bureau.
  • 20+ Years Serving Chester County Established track record in this specific market.

West Chester isn't a generic suburb. The borough's Victorian-era architecture, historic streetscapes, and proximity to Brandywine Creek Valley give it a landscape character that generic national landscapers don't understand.

The properties we work on in the West Chester area include:

  • Historic borough homes with small, defined lots where detail matters
  • Westtown and Pocopson Township estates with acreage that demands a master plan
  • Newer developments in Exton and Downingtown where the landscape starts from scratch
  • Chadds Ford and Glen Mills properties near the Brandywine watershed where drainage and grading are critical
  • Kennett Square and Unionville horse country properties where a design must work with the land, not fight it

Our team knows Chester County's clay-heavy soils, the drainage challenges near the Brandywine, the aesthetic of the Brandywine Valley, and the expectation of quality that comes with this market.

How It Works

01 — Free Consultation We visit your property, listen to your vision, review your budget, and identify the constraints (soil, grade, drainage, existing structures) that will shape the design.

02 — 3D Design Presentation Our designers produce a detailed 3D rendering of your proposed landscape. You see exactly what you're getting — materials, plantings, hardscape features, and lighting — before anything is built.

03 — Refinement We revise the design until it's exactly right. Changes are easy when they're still on screen.

04 — Installation Our installation crews are JHL employees — not subcontractors. They've been trained on our design standards and they take ownership of the quality.

05 — Ongoing Care (Optional) After installation, we offer maintenance programs to keep your landscape looking the way it did on installation day.

Chester County Projects — What We Actually Build

Westtown Township — 4.2-Acre Estate Master Plan. Rolling terrain, an existing carriage house, and a client who wanted to phase improvements over three seasons without losing cohesion. We developed a full property master plan: motor court realignment, formal garden room off the rear terrace, naturalized meadow buffer along the northern fence line, and a pool surround designed to complement the 1890s farmhouse architecture. Phase 1 (rear terrace and pool area) was installed that spring.

Kennett Square — Sloped Rear Yard, 8-Foot Grade Change. A rear yard that dropped nearly 8 feet from the house foundation to the rear property line, completely unusable as outdoor living space. Tiered solution: a primary Pennsylvania bluestone patio at grade with the rear door, a board-formed concrete retaining wall defining the step-down, and a lower lawn panel framed by planting beds. Landscape lighting integrated into wall cap and path edges.

Exton (East Whiteland Township) — Front Yard Redesign. Route 30 corridor property with a front yard that underperformed the quality of the home. Bluestone entry walk, specimen river birch grouping at the property corner, and a layered foundation planting that creates four-season interest without overwhelming the home elevation.

> "JHL did an outstanding job on our backyard in Westtown. The 3D rendering was incredibly helpful — we knew exactly what we were getting. The crew was professional and the quality of the stonework is exceptional." > — Charles M., Westtown

> "We hired JHL to redesign our front yard in West Chester Borough. They understood the historic character of the neighborhood and didn't try to modernize it inappropriately. The result is perfect." > — Ashley K., West Chester Borough

Q: Do you serve all of Chester County? A: From our West Chester office, we serve most of western and central Chester County — including West Chester, Westtown, Pocopson, Kennett Square, Chadds Ford, Exton, Downingtown, and surrounding communities. For the Main Line, Newtown Square, and eastern areas, our Newtown Square office handles those.

Q: What makes JHL different from other landscape designers in West Chester? A: Three things stand out: our 3D design process (you see exactly what you're getting before we build it), our ICPI-certified hardscape installation (not all contractors are certified), and the fact that we're a true design-build firm — we both design and install, so there's no disconnect between the plan and the finished product.

Q: Do you do just design, or just installation? A: We do both — together. Our design-build model means the same team that designed your landscape is responsible for building it. This eliminates the gap that happens when you hire a designer and then a separate contractor.

Q: What's the typical cost of a landscape design project in West Chester? A: Projects range widely depending on scope. A standalone 3D design plan starts around $1,500–$3,000. A full patio or hardscape installation with design typically runs $15,000–$60,000+ depending on size and materials. We provide a detailed estimate before any work is committed.

Q: Are you licensed and insured in Pennsylvania? A: Yes. We hold Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor license #PA035784. We're fully insured for liability and workers' compensation.

Q: Do you offer landscape maintenance after installation? A: Yes. We offer maintenance programs for properties we've installed, as well as standalone maintenance for existing landscapes. That said, our primary focus and expertise is in design and installation.

Q: How long does a typical landscape design project take? A: Design phase is typically 2–4 weeks. Installation timelines vary by project scope — a patio might take 1–2 weeks; a full property master plan implementation may take 6–8 weeks or happen in phases over a season.

Q: What areas of Chester County do you not serve from the West Chester office? A: We avoid pushing deeply east toward the Main Line from our West Chester office — Newtown Square, Springfield, Havertown, Bryn Mawr, and Wayne are covered by our Newtown Square location to ensure both locations can deliver properly.

Q: Do you do commercial landscape design? A: We focus primarily on residential landscape design and installation. We offer commercial maintenance services, but large-scale commercial design projects are evaluated case by case.

Q: What is 3D landscape rendering? A: 3D landscape rendering is a digital visualization of your proposed landscape — created before any work begins. You can see how your patio, plantings, lighting, and hardscape features will look from multiple angles. It removes the guesswork from landscape investment decisions.

Q: Do you handle permits? A: For projects that require permits (certain retaining walls, structures, grading work), we advise on requirements and can assist with the permitting process for Chester County and its townships.

Q: How do I get started? A: Contact us through our website or call our West Chester office. We'll schedule a free on-site consultation, assess your property, and talk through your vision before anything is committed.
