Landscape design is not landscaping. A landscaper maintains. A landscape designer transforms — starting with a plan that accounts for how your property drains, where the sun hits at what time of year, what the view looks like from inside your home, and how you'll actually use the space.

JHL Landscape Design has been producing landscape plans for Chester County and Main Line properties for over 20 years. Every project begins with a site analysis. Every plan is rendered in 3D before installation begins. And every installation is executed by our own trained crews — not subcontractors.

What Landscape Design Actually Includes

Professional landscape design is a layered process:

Site Analysis Before design begins, we assess your property's topography, soil composition, drainage patterns, sun and shade exposure, existing plants worth preserving, and the architectural character of your home. Chester County's clay-heavy soils and the Main Line's established grades require different approaches — we know both.

Conceptual Design We translate site conditions and client goals into a design concept — a vision for the property that balances aesthetics, function, and long-term maintenance realities.

3D Rendering Our 3D landscape renderings let you see the finished result before any material is purchased or any soil is moved. You'll see every patio slab, every planting bed, every lighting fixture, and every hardscape element in context. This is the most important step — it eliminates surprises and gives you full confidence to proceed.

Planting Plan Species selection based on your property's conditions, your maintenance appetite, and the aesthetic you're pursuing. We design for four-season interest, selecting plants that perform in Chester County and Delaware County's climate.

Construction Documentation For projects that move into installation, we produce construction-grade plans — grading plans, drainage details, material specifications, and installation sequencing — that guide our crews from start to finish.

Types of Landscape Design Projects

Master Plans A full-property design addressing all landscape elements — grading, drainage, hardscape, softscape, lighting, and irrigation. Phased implementation plans allow you to build out the vision over time.

Backyard Design & Transformation The most common entry point. Complete backyard redesign from concept through installation — outdoor living areas, patios, plantings, privacy screening, water features, and lighting.

Front Yard Design Curb appeal for historic West Chester Borough homes, Main Line properties, and newer Chester County developments. We design to the architectural character of the home.

Garden Design Planting-focused design work — perennial gardens, mixed borders, low-maintenance landscapes, native plant gardens, and seasonal interest plantings.

Renovation & Refresh Existing landscapes that have grown out of scale, lost their structure, or simply no longer reflect how you want to live. We assess what to keep, what to remove, and what to replace.

Chester County & Main Line Landscape Design Context

The properties we design for span two distinct markets:

Chester County (West Chester territory) Historic borough lots where character matters. Chester County estate properties on larger parcels where a master plan is necessary. Newer developments in Exton and Downingtown where everything starts from scratch. The Brandywine watershed area where drainage and grading are not optional considerations.

Main Line / Delaware County (Newtown Square territory) Older Main Line properties with mature trees and established grades that define the design constraints. Wayne and Berwyn homes where outdoor entertaining is central to how the property is used. Gladwyne and Villanova estates where scale and quality are non-negotiable. Narberth and Wynnewood where smaller lots demand smart, space-efficient design.

FAQs — Landscape Design

Q: Do I need a landscape designer or a landscaper? A: If you're maintaining what you have, you need a landscaper. If you want to change what you have — add a patio, replant a bed, create an outdoor room, or redesign a yard — you need a designer who can envision the result and plan the execution before anything is built.

Q: What's included in a landscape design engagement with JHL? A: At minimum: site analysis, 3D concept renderings, planting plan, and one round of revisions. For projects that move into construction, we add construction documentation and material specifications.

Q: How much does landscape design cost in Chester County? A: A standalone design engagement (3D renderings, plan, no installation) typically runs $1,500–$3,500 depending on property size and complexity. For design-build projects, the design cost is typically folded into the project total.

Q: How long does the design process take? A: From initial consultation to final 3D presentation is typically 2–4 weeks. Larger master plans may take 4–6 weeks. Revisions add time, which is why we work to understand your vision clearly up front.

Q: Can I just hire you to design and then use my own contractor? A: Yes. We offer design-only engagements. That said, our design-build model — where we both design and install — typically produces better results because the same team that designed the project installs it. There's no translation loss between design intent and execution.

Q: Do you work on commercial properties? A: Our primary focus is residential design. We evaluate commercial design projects on a case-by-case basis.

Q: What software do you use for 3D renderings? A: We use professional landscape design software to produce photorealistic 3D renderings. The output is a visual you can understand without any design training — you see exactly what you're approving.

Q: Are you licensed landscape architects? A: We are licensed landscape contractors (PA HIC #PA035784) and certified hardscape installers (ICPI certified). We operate as landscape designers and installers. The title "Landscape Architect" in PA requires a separate state license — we do not claim that title.
