Front Yard Landscape Design — Curb Appeal That Fits the Architecture

Front yard design is constrained design. The setback limits options. The neighbors' expectations frame the context. The home's architecture sets the aesthetic. And the result is the first thing anyone sees.

In West Chester Borough's historic neighborhoods, a front yard that fights the Victorian architecture is a mistake that's visible to every passerby. On the Main Line, a front yard that underperforms the neighborhood standard reads as neglect, even when it isn't.

JHL Landscape Design has renovated front yards across Chester County and the Main Line for over 20 years. We understand the context — historic, suburban, or contemporary — and we design accordingly.

Front Yard Design Services

Foundation Planting Redesign The most common front yard renovation. Overgrown foundation plantings — junipers, boxwoods, and yews that have grown well past the windows — replaced with a scaled, intentional design that frames the home rather than hiding it. We remove what doesn't work and replace with species selected for mature size, not just the appearance at planting.

Entry Walkway Design & Installation The entry walkway is the primary circulation element of the front yard. Material selection matters — bluestone on a Victorian home reads correctly; poured concrete on the same home does not. We design walkways that are functional, proportioned, and appropriate to the home's character.

Lawn Renovation & Design Front lawn areas redesigned for better drainage, improved appearance, and reduced maintenance. Where lawn makes sense, we specify the right seed mix for Chester County's conditions. Where it doesn't, we design alternative ground covers or planting beds.

Driveway Aprons & Entry Hardscape The connection between street and house — driveway apron material, edging, the transition from driveway to walkway — designed as part of the overall front yard composition.

Front Garden Design Planting beds in front yards — from simple foundation beds to more elaborate front garden designs for properties with room for it. Designed for four-season interest, appropriate scale, and neighbor-appropriate character.

Lighting Front yard lighting — entry accent lighting, path lighting, facade lighting, and driveway edge lighting — designed to enhance the front yard after dark and provide appropriate security lighting without the floodlight aesthetic.

Front Yard Design by Neighborhood Character

West Chester Borough historic neighborhoods (19380, 19382) Victorian and Federal-period homes require period-appropriate materials and scale. We avoid: oversized modern pavers, contemporary concrete forms, incongruously contemporary plantings. We favor: Pennsylvania bluestone, brick, natural stone, traditional species (boxwood hedges, English ivy where appropriate, flowering shade trees, traditional perennials in scale).

Chester County suburban developments More flexibility on materials and style — the neighborhood character is typically contemporary or transitional rather than historically constrained. We design to the home's architectural language rather than a historical standard.

Main Line in-town communities (Haverford, Ardmore, Narberth, Wynnewood) Walkable neighborhoods with close lot spacing and high visibility front yards. Small lot scale requires design economy — every element earns its place. We favor clean, well-maintained designs over ambitious ones that require maintenance the owner won't deliver.

Main Line estate communities (Gladwyne, Wayne, Bryn Mawr estates) Front approaches at this scale are true landscape design opportunities — entry drives, gatehouse areas, specimen tree placement, and formal front garden designs. These properties warrant master plan-level treatment of the front approach.

FAQs — Front Yard Landscape Design

Q: How much does a front yard redesign typically cost? A: A basic front yard renovation (foundation planting removal and replacement, walkway repair or replacement, lawn edging) typically runs $5,000–$15,000. More comprehensive renovations with new walkways, driveway aprons, garden areas, and lighting run $15,000–$40,000+.

Q: Do you remove existing plantings? A: Yes. We evaluate existing plantings — some are worth preserving, most in front yard renovations need to come out. Removal and disposal is included in our project scope.

Q: Can you match my home's architectural style? A: That's the starting point of every front yard design. We assess the home's style (period, materials, proportion) and design the landscape to complement it — not compete with it.

Q: How long does front yard work typically take? A: Design phase: 2–3 weeks. Installation: typically 3–7 days for most front yard renovations. More complex projects (new walkway with base excavation, significant hardscape) take 1–2 weeks.
