Villanova's residential landscape has a formal character that sets it apart from other parts of the Main Line. The architecture tends toward Georgian and Colonial Revival. Gardens have axes. Hedges are clipped. The relationship between house and grounds is intentional and structured. Pool landscape design on these properties is an exercise in extending that architectural language into the outdoor environment.
Our pool landscape design work in Villanova begins with the house. Where are the primary living spaces? How do the indoor rooms orient to the garden? What is the existing formal structure, and how does a pool relate to it? On many Villanova properties, the answer is that the pool belongs on an axis, either aligned with a central garden room or positioned symmetrically within a broader outdoor composition.
Formal hedging defines the pool's edges in many of our Villanova projects. A clipped hornbeam or yew hedge, set back from the coping, creates the sense of a room without a roof. Within that enclosure, the planting is restrained: topiaries, formal perennial borders, climbing roses on stone pillars. The palette is deliberate and does not compete with the architecture.
The pool shape on formal properties is almost always rectilinear. A classic plunge pool or a lap pool with a perimeter overflow creates a mirror surface that reflects the sky and the surrounding hedges. Coping in cut limestone or Pennsylvania bluestone, set flush, completes the architectural effect. Every detail is resolved.
The relationship between the pool terrace and the interior is given careful attention. French doors that open onto a terrace that steps down to the pool garden create a sequence of spaces that reads as designed from both inside and outside. We often work with the architecture and interior design to ensure that sight lines are preserved and that the outdoor environment extends the indoor aesthetic rather than departing from it.
Villanova pool projects pair naturally with backyard design to address the full outdoor composition, and with landscape lighting to maintain the formal quality of the space after dark.
