Landscaping in Radnor, PA — Main Line Estate Grounds
Radnor Township is Main Line proper — stone and stucco architecture, mature specimen trees planted three and four generations ago, and grounds that were designed once and have been maintained ever since. Properties here are rarely a blank sheet. The work is almost always about editing an existing landscape rather than inventing a new one.
JHL Landscape Design serves Radnor from our Newtown Square studio, a short drive south. Radnor shares the 19087 ZIP with Wayne but the two read differently on the ground, and we design them differently.
Designing Around What Is Already There
On a Radnor property, the mature material is usually the most valuable thing on site. The design starts by deciding what stays:
- Specimen trees whose root zones set the limits of any hardscape
- Established stone walls and steps worth restoring rather than replacing
- Grades that have settled over decades and should be worked with, not fought
- Overgrown plantings that need editing back to their original intent
- Original design bones that are still sound underneath fifty years of accumulation
A 3D rendering earns its keep on this kind of property. When the question is whether to take out a hedge that has been in place since the 1970s, seeing the answer before committing is worth a great deal.
Estate-Scale Hardscape
Radnor hardscape has to match the architecture it sits against, which on these properties usually means stone:
- Pennsylvania bluestone terraces laid to complement stone and stucco elevations
- Dry-laid and mortared fieldstone walls consistent with the existing site walls
- Motor courts and entry sequences scaled to the approach
- Steps and grade transitions engineered for freeze-thaw on a clay subgrade
- ICPI-certified base preparation, because the failures on this work are all base failures
Gardens and Seasonal Structure
Radnor clients tend to want a garden rather than a landscape — a property that changes through the year and rewards a closer look:
- Layered borders with real winter structure, not just summer colour
- Shade planting under mature canopy where turf has stopped competing
- Deer-resistant selection, which on this side of the township is not optional
- Cutting and kitchen gardens sited where they are actually convenient to use
- Lighting that renders the specimen trees properly after dark

Radnor Landscaping Questions
Q: Radnor and Wayne share a ZIP code. Which page applies to my property? A: Either will reach us — it is one studio and one team. We keep the pages separate because the properties differ: Radnor Township runs to larger, older estate grounds, while much of Wayne is village-scale. Tell us the address and we will bring the right approach.
Q: Can you work around mature specimen trees? A: That is most of the job here. Root zones set the limits on any hardscape, and we survey them before the layout is fixed. Where a terrace would compromise a mature tree, we move the terrace — the tree is not replaceable within your ownership of the property.
Q: Our stone walls are original but failing. Rebuild or replace? A: Usually rebuild. Original site walls carry the character of the property and the stone itself is often better than anything currently available. We reset and repoint where the structure allows, and match salvaged material where it does not.
Q: Is deer pressure as bad in Radnor as people say? A: Yes. Deer-resistant selection is a design constraint here, not a preference. We plan the plant palette around it from the start rather than treating browse damage as something to spray for later.
