Landscape Design in Malvern, PA

Malvern sits at the edge of Chester County's Paoli–Thorndale rail corridor — a community of substantial residential properties, estate lots, and newer developments set against Chester County's characteristic rolling terrain. The landscape character here is transitional: close enough to the Main Line to share its expectations for design quality, rooted enough in Chester County's rural tradition to appreciate plants that perform in this specific regional climate.

JHL Landscape Design serves Malvern from our West Chester office at 701 S Franklin St, Suite 101. Our crews are local to this territory — we know the soils, the grade patterns, the permit requirements in East Whiteland and Malvern Borough.

What Malvern Property Owners Invest In

Estate-scale master plans. Malvern's larger lots — particularly in the townships surrounding the borough — are ideal candidates for full-property master plans. Grade changes, drainage, and the relationship between hardscape and naturalized areas are recurring design elements at this scale.

Outdoor living and patio design. Chester County's summers are short. Malvern homeowners invest in outdoor spaces that maximize usable outdoor time — covered patios, outdoor kitchens with built-in grills, fire features for shoulder-season use, and lighting that extends evenings into October.

Front yard and approach design. Route 30 corridor properties and the newer developments along the Great Valley periphery often have front yards that underperform the quality of the home. Front yard redesigns — refined foundation plantings, new entry walks in bluestone or premium pavers, specimen tree placement — are high-visibility investments for Malvern's more visible streetscapes.

A Malvern Project: Sloped Rear Yard Transformation

A Malvern client in East Whiteland Township came to us with a rear yard that dropped nearly 8 feet from the house foundation to the rear property line — completely unusable as outdoor living space. Our solution involved a tiered design: a primary Pennsylvania bluestone patio at grade with the rear door, a board-formed concrete retaining wall defining the step-down, and a lower lawn panel framed by planting beds. Landscape lighting was integrated into the wall cap and path edges. The 3D rendering helped the client visualize exactly how both levels would feel before construction began.
