Mature trees and established grades. Bryn Mawr's significant tree canopy is one of its most valuable assets — and one of the most significant constraints in landscape design. Hardscape placement must account for root zones. Planting design must work under canopy. Grade changes must be managed carefully to avoid root damage. We design around Bryn Mawr's trees, not through them.

Architectural context. Bryn Mawr's residential architecture spans a century. The landscape design should feel contemporary or appropriate to the home's period — we don't apply the same aesthetic to a 1920s stone colonial and a 1990s center hall.

Recent Bryn Mawr Project

A Bryn Mawr client came to us with a rear yard dominated by a decades-old concrete patio that had heaved unevenly and was too small for the family's actual entertaining use. The rear yard also had a 6-foot grade change from house level to the back fence line.

Our solution: remove the concrete, regrade to create two usable levels, install a main bluestone patio at house level with a seating wall defining the step-down, and a lower-level flagstone seating area near the garden at the rear. Landscape lighting was integrated into the seating walls and along the transition steps.

The 3D rendering was critical for the client — seeing both levels from the second-floor window perspective before committing to the design.
