Pool Landscape Design
Pool landscape design is the design discipline that integrates a swimming pool into the surrounding landscape as part of a cohesive outdoor environment. A pool is a construction element, not a landscape. Without intentional landscape design around it, a pool looks like exactly what it is: a hole in the ground with water in it. Pool landscape design creates the setting, the transition from pool to patio to planting, and the complete outdoor environment that makes the pool area function as a genuine outdoor room.
What Pool Landscape Design Addresses
Pool surround design covers the hardscape immediately adjacent to the pool: coping material and profile, deck surface material and width, steps and entry points, and drainage design that handles pool water overflow and rainfall without saturating the surrounding grade. Beyond the immediate surround, pool landscape design addresses privacy screening through planting and fencing, equipment area concealment, lighting for safety and atmosphere, and the transition zones between the pool deck and the rest of the outdoor living area. Storage for pool equipment and accessories is also addressed in the design stage, not added as an afterthought.
In Chester County and on the Main Line, pool landscape design must account for property setbacks (which vary by township), fence requirements, and the relationship between the pool area and the home's primary indoor-outdoor circulation path. A pool sited poorly relative to the house creates awkward transitions that no amount of planting or hardscape can fully resolve. Starting with design before construction is the only way to get this right.
Pool Landscape Renovation
Many requests JHL receives for pool landscape design are renovations: existing pools with concrete surrounds that look dated, inadequate planting, or pool areas that were never designed as part of the broader landscape. Renovation scope typically includes coping replacement or overlay, new deck surface, updated planting beds, and a complete lighting redesign. The result is a pool area that reads as estate-quality rather than builder-grade.
