Seasonal Planting Guide for Chester County, PA

A well-designed Chester County landscape performs year-round — not just in the six weeks when everything is blooming. This guide covers the plants that deliver seasonal interest across all four seasons in Zone 6b-7a.

Spring Interest (March–May)

Early Spring (March–April)

  • Serviceberry (Amelanchier): white flower clouds before leaves emerge, one of the first woody plants to flower
  • Daffodils (Narcissus): plant in fall, reliable spring color, deer-resistant
  • Forsythia: yellow branches before leaves; aggressive spreader, use with discipline
  • Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata): white flowers in early April, smaller than Saucer Magnolia

Mid-Spring (April–May)

  • Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida): the Pennsylvania native icon — white or pink bracts in May
  • Azaleas (Rhododendron): massive color but only 3-week bloom window

Midsummer (July–August)

  • Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia): peak summer native
  • Purple Coneflower (Echinacea): long season, pollinator magnet
  • Panicle Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata): white to pink blooms; PeeGee, Quick Fire, Little Lime
  • Daylily continued bloom: extended-season varieties push into August

Late Summer (August–September)

  • Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium purpureum): native, 4-6 feet, massive pink blooms
  • Russian Sage (Perovskia): long lavender-blue season
  • Japanese Anemone: elegant white or pink flowers; a late-season treasure

Fall Interest (October–November)
