Backyard Privacy Ideas for Chester County Properties
Privacy is one of the most common design goals we hear from Chester County homeowners — and for good reason. Lot sizes here vary from the dense 6,000 sq ft in-borough lots to the generous acre-plus parcels in rural Chester County, but the goal is the same: create outdoor spaces that feel like your own.
Evergreen Hedge Screening
The most cost-effective and natural-looking screening approach. Key species for Chester County:
Emerald Green Arborvitae: the standard. Dense, narrow columnar form, dark green, grows 3-4 feet per year when young. Space 3 feet on center for a solid screen. Full sun.
Green Giant Arborvitae: faster and larger than Emerald Green. Pyramidal form, 40-60 feet at maturity, 5-6 feet wide. Space 5-6 feet on center for solid screening.
Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana): native, extremely tough, tolerates poor soils and neglect. Slower growth rate than arborvitae but longer-lived and more adapted to Chester County's natural conditions.
Sky Pencil Holly: columnar evergreen for tight spaces. Stays narrow (2-3 feet wide), reaches 6-10 feet. Works where arborvitae would be too wide.
Privacy Fencing
Cedar privacy fence: the classic residential privacy fence. 6-foot height provides solid screening. Natural cedar color or stained to complement the landscape. Longevity: 15-25 years with maintenance.
Composite fencing: no maintenance, consistent appearance, longer life than cedar. Higher upfront cost.
Aluminum or black steel fence: appropriate when you want a boundary marker with partial screening — often combined with planting for a layered screen.
Note: Pennsylvania requires permits for fencing in most jurisdictions, and setback requirements limit placement. We research this for every project.
Berms and Grading
A planted berm — a raised landform with planting on top — lifts the planting above grade and provides faster effective screening. A 2-foot berm with 6-foot arborvitae provides 8 feet of effective screening from adjacent properties at grade.
Berms require careful grading to drain properly and must be designed to fit the natural topography of the site.
Walls and Hardscape Screens
For properties where planting alone won't provide adequate privacy (urban or dense suburban lots), a combination of low retaining or garden walls with planting above can create a layered screen. A 3-foot wall topped with a 4-foot arborvitae provides 7 feet of screening with a footprint half as wide as a pure planting solution.
Pergola Screening
A pergola with side screening panels, privacy lattice, or trained climbing plants (wisteria, climbing hydrangea, trumpet vine) creates partial screening for the entertaining zone specifically — without trying to screen the entire yard perimeter.
