What's the Difference Between a Landscape Designer and a Landscaper?

This is one of the most common questions from homeowners who are trying to understand the industry. The distinction matters a lot.

What a Landscaper Does

A landscaper primarily installs and maintains plants and outdoor spaces. Services typically include:

• Planting (trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals)
• Lawn care (mowing, edging, fertilizing, aeration)
• Pruning and maintenance
• Mulching and bed maintenance
• Sometimes hardscape installation (varying quality)

Landscapers may or may not create a design before installation. Many will simply install what the homeowner requests, or suggest plants based on what they have available.

What a Landscape Designer Does

A landscape designer creates a plan — a professional design for the outdoor environment that accounts for site conditions, client goals, architectural context, and long-term performance. Deliverables include:

• Site analysis and assessment
• 3D renderings showing the finished design
• Planting plans with specified species
• Construction documents for hardscape and structures

A landscape designer may or may not provide installation services.
