What Does ICPI Certified Mean?
ICPI stands for the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute — the North American trade association and technical authority for the concrete paving industry.
What ICPI Certification Covers
ICPI certification training covers:
- Subgrade preparation: soil assessment, excavation depth, compaction requirements
- Base preparation: aggregate selection, lift thickness, compaction methodology
- Edge restraint systems: perimeter containment to prevent lateral paver movement
- Installation technique: leveling course, paver placement, joint spacing, pattern installation
- Drainage engineering: slope requirements, outlet design, drainage integration
- Quality standards: dimensional tolerances, joint sand selection, sealing
Why ICPI Certification Matters
The difference between hardscape that lasts 20 years and hardscape that heaves and sinks in 5 years is almost entirely in base preparation. ICPI-certified installers understand that difference and build it correctly.
When a contractor claims ICPI certification, they should be able to provide the certification number and documentation. Don't take it on faith — ask.
JHL's ICPI Certification
JHL Landscape Design's installation team is ICPI Certified. Our base preparation standards exceed the minimum ICPI specification — we excavate deeper and use thicker compacted aggregate bases than code minimum in Chester County, because Chester County's clay soils and freeze-thaw cycles demand it.
